Mr Portobello Book Blog takes over today with his review of The Counterfeit Candidate by Brian Klein. I think you’ll agree, it’s a book he rather enjoyed!
Three audacious thieves carry out the biggest safe depository heist in Argentine history, escaping with more than one hundred million dollars’ worth of valuables. Within hours, an encrypted phone call to America triggers a blood-soaked manhunt as the thieves are tracked down, systematically tortured, then murdered.
This is one of my favourite books this year and I very much look forward to reading future works by Brian Klein. A terrific story with a fresh, exciting, fast paced plot. Read it and I am sure you will be enthralled.

As the Russian Army closes in on the war-torn City, Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun take their own lives. Their bodies are burned and buried in the Reich Chancellery garden, above the Führer’s bunker.

Senator John Franklin, hailed as the ‘Great Unifier’, secures the Republican Presidential nomination and seems destined for the Oval Office. Despite the sixty-seven year interval and a span of thirteen thousand miles, these events are indelibly linked. The story links back to the end of the Second World War and the escape of Hitler, Braun and Bormann to South America. It intertwines into modern American politics and a wonderful bank robbery plot with the descriptions of characters and places fresh and engaging. The characters instantly come to life with the three bank robbers seeming to be unlikely heroes and the focus for the pages ahead.
What a wonderful debut novel by Brian Klein: The Counterfeit Candidate. I have just finished reading this novel and I’m so excited by the climax to the book! I wish I could share the excitement and detail of the final few chapters but of course that would spoil the plot for you! What I can say is Klein’s debut novel is brilliantly judged, wonderfully creative and incredible in all senses of the word.
Chief Inspector Nicolas Vargas of the Buenos Aires Police Department and Lieutenant Troy Hembury of the LAPD are sucked into a dark political conspiracy concealing an incredible historical truth stretching from the infamous Berlin bunker to Buenos Aires and to Washington, which threatens the very heart and soul of American democracy.
About the Author
As the story develops further, it becomes clear the scope and focus for this book is much wider and much more sinister. I was on the edge of my seat (and bed 🙂) all the way through, as the story develops and complexities grow with the increasing feeling of despair in the race against time for the heroes of the story, Chief Inspector Nicholas Varges and his long-time friend Lieutenant Troy Hembury.
