There was a beautiful paperback edition of Conjure Women by Afia Atakora, published 15 April 2021 by 4th Estate. Also included was The Master’s Tools Will Never Dismantle The Master’s House by Audre Lorde, a Penguin Modern edition, a beautiful pair of socks and matching cards by Emma Make, a Pink Salad Lon lip gloss in Toasted Velvet and a Books That Matter magazine and book mark.
Every subscription box will contain a book by a female author, at least three book themed gifts by women artists and a Books That Matter magazine.
Subscription costs are £17 for either a one off box or a rolling subscription. A 3 month subscription is £45, giving a saving of £6, a 6 month subscription is £ 90, which is a saving of £12 and a 12 month subscription is £180 giving a £24 saving on a monthly rolling subscription. Postage costs of £3 are in addition to the subscription prices.
May’s theme is Choose Love, looking at the journeys and stories of refugees and displaced people.  Books That Matter will be donating 10% from the proceeds of each sale to Choose Love, a charity who work with people fleeing war, persecution and climate change.
Each month there is a different theme and April’s was Dare to Be Powerful, celebrating Black Women’s History Month.
So what did I think to my first Books That Matter subscription box? Overall I was delighted with the contents. I always worry that I will have a book that comes in a subscription box but Books That Matter use themes and clues about the authors to be included that I could err on the side of caution and assume I didn’t have this month’s title. I love the socks and the lip gloss is just the right shade to suit anyone. The contents are all things I like but would probably not bought for myself individually. It was a lovely surprise to find the socks included as this is something I would definitely not have bought for myself (but would have envied if I saw someone else buying them – indeed I would have envied someone else who had bought the whole box if I hadn’t). I’m not sure I could justify the cost each month though is perfect as a special treat now and again, or as a present for someone else.

Books That Matter are a feminist subscription box brand that puts women’s writing and art at the forefront of their boxes. As they say themselves:
So what arrived in April’s box?

“Our bestselling book subscription boxes each capture an immersive theme specifically to enlighten, educate and empower, all in a way that feels like a gift every single month.”

A little while ago Books That Matter did a giveaway over on Twitter for a subscription to their book boxes. Whilst I didn’t win, I did receive a 20% money off code. Having had a look at their site I decided it would have been rude not to use the code and so I bought their April subscription box.
