Gumnuts Cottage

We spent two idyllic days making the most of the cottage and its scenic surrounds – exploring the nearby mountains by day, and hunkering down in the cottage as the sun began to set. Fires were lit; books were read, scones were baked. We ate leisurely breakfast to the sound of bird song; drunk morning cups of tea on the porch, slept to the sound of silence, snug under the heat of the electric blankets. The spacious bathroom’s charming claw footed bath was the perfect place for a long hot soak after a long hike.

I love the quaint nature of the towns in the Blue Mountains; the cosy cafes, the antique shops; and the altogether slower pace of life; and so, when I came across The Gumnuts, a cosy cottage nestled in the heart of beautiful Blackheath, I jumped at the chance for a weekend getaway with friends. Just a short walk from the village strip and five minutes from the Popes Glen bushwalking track that takes you to Govett’s Leap, Pulpit Rock and the Grose Valley in the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains National Park, The Gumnuts is a traditional timber cottage that makes for the cosiest of country retreats away from the fast-paced city life so many of us have become accustomed to.

Gumnuts Location

Tranquil, still and perfectly serene, from the near-silent surrounds to the cosy nature of the cottage, as soon as we pulled into the driveway, we were cloacked in a sense of ease that you simply don’t find living in Sydney. A pretty- as-a-postcard cottage that could have come straight out of the pages of a picture-book, the pastel porch opens into a home filled with books, elegant yet homely décor and warm touches that make the cottage the ultimate slice of Blue Mountains bliss. From the sun-filled sitting room that has a toasty log-burning fire and a snug and stylish sofa, to the fully stocked chef’s kitchen that looks out onto bushland beyond and leads out onto a gorgeous deck that catches the sun’s afternoon rays – making it the perfect spot for a sundown tipple or two – The Gumnuts has everything you could want and more for a stylish escape in the mountains.

When the weather starts to cool, and days can no longer be spent lazing on the beach, my favourite place to visit is the Blue Mountains. While just a two- hour drive from Sydney, it’s a region in New South Wales that couldn’t feel further away from the hustle and bustle of Bondi’s beautiful beaches. Home to amazing walks, stunning national parks and clifftop look-outs a-plenty, the Blue Mountains are yet further proof that Australia really is one of the most beautiful places on earth.
