Oakwood Falls by D. C. Brockwell – extract

She jumped when he started screaming. The branch and roots tugged away from one another. Not wanting Ashley to witness the inevitable, she covered her daughter’s eyes, unable to avert her own.

When she checked on Ant Man, her little friends had munched on him. Every now and again she glimpsed half eaten skin, patches, on his legs, stomach, face. Then the ants left the man’s head, mostly skeleton, with a bit of flesh hanging from it. They ate everything, even his eyeballs.
Those who could scream did so. Squat guy was too busy trying to escape the brambles, with no luck. Sinking Man screamed, watching his partner in two halves, the top half crying at the sight of his own severed legs in front of him.
From the dawn of mankind, Mother Nature has always known of humans’ destructive ways. To ensure her own survival, she created The Ferralling, a vicious and bloodthirsty breed of creature, who kept humans in check. When The Ferralling became a liability, She destroyed them, deciding to put her survival in the hands of only the most deserving humans. These chosen ones She calls The Reclaimed.
About the Book
Who will emerge victorious from this brutal and bloody battle?
Upon seeing his partners’ fates, the fourth gang member, an average height brunette with a scar on his left cheek and a gold central incisor, tried running towards the embankment, when his foot sank into the mud. “No! Please, I’m not like these guys. Help me!”
Back with In-Pieces Man, Carrie couldn’t turn away when roots grabbed the living torso. Amid calls to leave him alone, the roots dug into him, turning his skin a similar colour to the soil below. “Please, help!” He cried, roots connecting to the back of his head. They pulled him into the earth, his flesh mulching. The last piece of him to disappear was his face, more specifically his mouth shaped in a horrific O.
Carrie gasped when the brambles dragged shorter, squat guy past his partners. He cried during his trip, trying desperately to free himself.

When Mother Nature chose Ashley Oakwood, she made a mistake. Now it’s time to eradicate that mistake.
The third man, a blonde guy with a tattoo on his neck glanced down at his feet and screamed. When Carrie scanned his footwear, they were black. The blackness crept up him, until she realised ants were swarming over him. He fell backwards. While on his back, the ants continued their march, covering him from head to toe.
Carrie shielded her daughter from the onslaught. She looked up to find Tall Guy’s body limp. Disappointed, she smiled when a root shot up from the ground and wrapped itself around his waist. He woke up, trying to release the damp wood, with no luck.
His yelling intensified. Blood seeped into his jeans; it poured out of his waist, as his upper and lower body separated. His legs landed with a squelch on the earth, while his torso remained attached to the branch. Then, the branch released its hold and his body landed with a dull thud.

About the Author
Tall, lanky guy looked up, hearing rustling in the trees, as a branch wrapped itself around his throat and lifted him two metres above the ground, his legs running in mid- air. He tried to talk, while clawing at the twigs.
The rest of his gang stood there, watching, their mouths still gaping, their brains not registering a pair of brambles had hold of their colleague. “If I were you, guys, I’d run.”

The only human to be born of the Earth, Ashley Oakwood has powers beyond that of The Reclaimed. A kind and generous young woman, who wants nothing more than to belong, Ashley watches humans from afar, until she meets James, the man of her dreams. When he rejects her, he sets in motion a chain of events that pits humans against The Reclaimed, The last of The Ferralling, and Mother Nature Herself.
