The supporting characters here are fabulous, mostly engaging in their own way and of course there are one or two that deserve all the curses. Normally a village like Middledip where everyone knows your business would make me head for the hills, but I love the community spirit and friendship offered, and I could quite happily live there, especially if I had someone like Marietta as a neighbour with her homemade cookies.Sky Terran, our main character is a 39 year old property developer who for reasons I won’t spoil, ends up buying a large dilapidated house in Middledip. Sky is no stranger to the area as she and the village have history but it’s fair to say that someone’s nose is ever so slightly put out of joint when she first arrives.But when Daz’s ex turns up determined to win him back and it seems he might not be the man Sky thought he was, she remembers how much allowing people into her life – and heart – can hurt.I loved Sky as a character. She had a troubled history but had made a fantastic life for herself through hard work and determination. She also had a great sense of fun combined with an acute awareness of social and ecological responsibility which underpinned everything she did. Young Wilf was a joy and as for Daz I really felt for him as his loyalties were torn and he was rather put in a no win situation.

“Wowsers Trousers” as young lad Wilf Brown would say. This is my first Christmas book of the year which I had on pre-order and I couldn’t have picked a better one to start off my Christmas reading. Sue Moorcroft and her books have appeared on this blog far too many times to list (just put her name in the search bar for previous reviews and features) and each time I think this is the best book so far! If I hadn’t had other things to do, I could quite happily have read this in one sitting.
The story is set in the lead up to, and over Christmas and I loved the wintry, Christmassy snowy feel of the story. As always with Sue’s books, there is a backstory with more serious issues being explored and the juxtaposition of these together with the lighter thread of romance and the Winter Street Christmas preparations gives a welcome feel of light and shade.
As the snow falls, will she and Daz find a way through – and help win a Christmas victory for Winter Street?
MY THOUGHTS
With this latest outing, we are back in Middledip – the Cambridgeshire village of many previous books and it was lovely to see some earlier characters make returning cameo appearances. This book is very much a standalone though, with no prior knowledge necessary for enjoyment.
When Sky Terran returns to the village of Middledip after losing the job she loves, she anticipates a quiet Christmas getting used to her new life. However, the annual street decoration competition is coming up and this year, the residents of Winter Street are determined to win. As she is pulled into the preparations, Sky quickly grows to love the quirky, tight-knit community she is now part of. Including the extremely handsome Daz, who soon becomes more than just a friendly neighbour.

A White Christmas on Winter Street hit all the right notes for me – the romance element, an uplifting and thoughtful story, all wrapped up in a thick jumper of a wintry setting. I loved it and have no hesitation in recommending.
