I reviewed Sarah Morgan’s latest novel, Beach House Summer, just a couple of days ago but it’s always good to catch up with an author’s previous novels too. I really enjoyed the audiobook of The Summer Seekers (published 2021) when I listened to that recently so thought I’d tell you all about that book too!
About the Author
Martha is having a quarter-life crisis. Unemployed, unloved and uninspired, she just can’t get her life together. But she knows something has to change.
Kathleen is eighty years old. After a run-in with an intruder, her daughter wants her to move into a residential home. She’s not having any of it. What she craves – needs – is adventure.
When Martha sees Kathleen’s advert for a driver and companion to take an epic road trip across America, she decides this job might be the answer to her prayers. Travelling with a stranger? No problem. She’s not the world’s best driver, but it couldn’t be worse than living with her parents again. And anyway, how much trouble can one eighty-year-old woman be?
Liza is drowning under the daily stress of family life. The last thing she needs is her mother jetting off on a wild holiday, making Liza dream of a solo break of her own.
Sarah lives near London, England and when she isn’t writing or reading, she likes to spend time outdoors hiking or riding her mountain bike.
As these women embark on the journey of a lifetime, they all discover it’s never too late for adventure…
About the book
I absolutely loved every minute of this book. It was such a joyous read and a brilliant addition to any summer reading list. I listened to this using the Libby app and the narrator, Georgina Sutton, was excellent too.
I think that The Summer Seekers is my favourite of Sarah Morgan’s books. It’s funny, moving and definitely deserving of the title ‘feel-good fiction’.
The three main characters are all fabulous but octogenarian Kathleen is the standout. I loved her sense of adventure and her dry wit. She made me laugh so often. I enjoyed Martha’s gradual increase in confidence helped in no small part by Kathleen’s mischievous matchmaking! The connection and growing friendship between these two, despite their age difference, was wonderful to read about.

Sarah Morgan is a USA Today and Sunday Times bestselling author of romance and women’s fiction. She has sold over 21 million copies of her books and her trademark humour and warmth have gained her fans across the globe.
While her mother was enjoying her Route 66 road-trip, her daughter Liza was feeling that nobody really noticed her any more and that her family just took her for granted. Something I’m sure many people will relate to! She had her own escape in the book which led to a different kind of adventure that was no less satisfying to read about.
