The Accomplice by Steve Cavanagh | Book Review | #TheAccomplice #EddieFlynn Book 7

THE LAWYER
Eddie Flynn won’t take a case unless his client is innocent. Now, he has to prove to a jury, and the entire world, that Carrie Miller was just another victim of the Sandman. She didn’t know her husband’s dark side and she had no part in the murders. But so far, Eddie and his team are the only ones who believe her.

Steve Cavanagh was born and raised in Belfast before leaving for Dublin at the age of eighteen to study Law. He practiced civil rights law and was involved in several high-profile cases; in 2010 he represented a factory worker who suffered racial abuse in the workplace and won the largest award of damages for race discrimination in Northern Ireland legal history.Website | Twitter | Facebook | Instagram | Goodreads | Amazon UKThe reader is thrust into the action from the off. Serial killer, The Sandman has been identified as Daniel Miller. He however has slipped the clutches of the NYPD and FBI and has left his wife Carrie Miller to face charges of being his accomplice; something she vehemently denies. With her trial due to start in a few days, Eddie Flynn and his team have to hit the ground running with a defence, and then, when the Sandman strikes again, the case gets personal.THE MOST HATED WOMAN IN AMERICA
The Sandman killings have been solved. Daniel Miller murdered fourteen people before he vanished. His wife, Carrie, now faces trial as his accomplice. The FBI, the District Attorney, the media and everyone in America believe she knew and helped cover up her husband’s crimes. I’ve read and enjoyed Twisted, a standalone by Steve Cavanagh but despite collecting several of this series over time, my first introduction to Eddie Flynn came last year with Book 6, The Devil’s Advocate (reviewed here on Goodreads) which I loved. The Accomplice was put on my wishlist and I have been patiently waiting for my library reservation for some time. I love courtroom dramas and thrillers and by combining both, this series is highly satisfying.
Whilst I wasn’t entirely surprised by the outcome, the journey there was a deliciously twisty one and there is certainly one character that I am hoping will make a return appearance in future books.
Friendless and with everyone against her, Carrie doesn’t make Eddie’s job easy and being up against a District Attorney determined to win at any price, Eddie has to resort to some creativity to get his case back on track – these cunning shenanigans are what I love about these books (I thoroughly enjoyed the veneziana with Wings and Tony 2F) as well as being gripping they are so entertaining with a touch of humour.
THE KILLER
With his wife on trial, the Sandman is forced to come out of hiding to save her from a life sentence. He will kill to protect her and everyone involved in the case is a target.
THE FORMER FBI AGENT
Gabriel Lake used to be a federal agent, before someone tried to kill him. Now, he’s an investigator with a vendetta against the Sandman. He’s the only one who can catch him, because he believes that everything the FBI knows about serial killers is wrong.
He holds a certificate in Advanced Advocacy and lectures on various legal subjects (but really he just likes to tell jokes). His novel The Liar won the CWA Gold Dagger award while his follow-up novel Thirteen won the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year Award in 2019. Twisted was a Sunday Times Top 10 Bestseller. He is married with two young children.

Even Eddie Flynn…

MY THOUGHTS
If you’re new to this series don’t worry about jumping in part way through – I will definitely catch up with the backstory but from my experience you can enjoy them without any prior knowledge. The Accomplice is a brilliant addition to the series and I’m looking forward to the next one.

Even though I’m new to this series, I loved seeing Team Flynn back again. Eddie – a lawyer with a heart, retired judge Harry, lawyer Kate and ex cop Bloch – who I have to say, apart from Eddie, she is my favourite – a fabulous ‘no frills’ character. This is another pacy and suspenseful thriller with a monster at its centre whose MO and trophy collection made me squirm. I won’t divulge plot details but it was one of those books that I just wanted to keep reading, I was just so invested in the whole shebang and there was never a dull moment.
