#TenThings about Carla Luna #author of Field Games | @rararesources @casacullen

For years, Rick has proven his archaeological skills all over the Mediterranean. But with no graduate degree—and a habit of attracting trouble—his reputation could use a little rehab. All he has to do is play by the rules while he’s in Cyprus and he’ll secure a coveted recommendation for his next job. Until Olivia resurfaces like a cursed relic from the past.
Soap Collector Extraordinaire: I have a huge collection of hotel soaps. When I was eight, my father went on a business trip to Spain and brought me back a little bag filled with soaps from the hotels he’d stayed at. Since then, I’ve made it a point to collect soap everywhere I go, including far-flung locations like Turkey, India, and Jordan. Right now, I have about 250 different soaps stored in a huge Rubbermaid bin!
80s Girl: I grew up in the 1980s and I’ll always be an 80s girl at heart. I still have a fondness for New Wave music (like Duran Duran and the Eurythmics), John Hughes movies, hair scrunchies, video games like Centipede and Ms. Pac-Man, and mixtapes.
Carla Luna writes contemporary romance with a dollop of humour and a pinch of spice. A former archaeologist, she still dreams of traveling to far-off places and channels that wanderlust into the settings of her stories. When she’s not writing, she works in a spice emporium where she gets paid to discuss food and share her favourite recipes. Her passions include Broadway musicals, baking, whimsical office supplies, and pop culture podcasts. Though she has roots in Los Angeles and Vancouver Island, she currently resides in Wisconsin with her family and her feisty Siberian cat.

Broadway Fan: Even though I can barely carry a tune, I’m a huge fan of Broadway musicals. I love singing along to cast albums, often while baking or driving. Some of my favourite shows include Hamilton, Next to Normal, The Book of Mormon, Evita, and Les Misérables.
After the disastrous way her first archaeological dig ended, graduate student Olivia Sanchez abandoned her dreams of working in the field. Now, thanks to a last-minute teaching opportunity in Cyprus, she’ll get another chance to explore ancient history firsthand. This time, failure isn’t an option.
Map Enthusiast: I love maps and own hand-drawn parchment maps of the Ottoman Empire and Middle-Earth (from Lord of the Rings). Whenever I travel, I usually bring a paper map with me, because I think they’re more reliable than the GPS on my phone. When reading fantasy novels, I always love it when the book includes a detailed map of the world.
Given that their last fling nearly led to their academic ruin, Olivia and Rick can’t afford to repeat their past mistakes. But as they work together under the scorching Mediterranean sun, the heat between them proves impossible to ignore.

What happens in the field, stays in the field. Or does it?
Archaeologist: Before I had kids, I got a master’s degree in archaeology and completed all my coursework for a PhD. Though I never got around to writing that dissertation (I’d much rather write fiction!), I was fortunate enough to work on digs in the Mediterranean and the Middle East. One of my favourite experiences was digging up the ruins of a Roman villa on the island of Cyprus—a project that inspired my current romantic comedy, Field Rules.

But digging up the past takes on a whole new meaning when she’s forced to team up with her ex, shovel bum Rick Langston.
Frog Prince: When my kids were little, I used to volunteer with an organization that produced children’s plays based on popular fairy tales. Even though the actors were amateurs like me, we had a lot of fun. Among the plays we did were The Frog Prince (where I had the lead role), Beauty and the Beast, The Emperor’s New Clothes, and The Shoemaker and the Elves.
Spice Girl: In my day job, I work at a spice emporium located in a small town in Wisconsin. The shop sells all kinds of spices, including seasoning blends, curries, herbs, chilies, and extracts. The job is a great fit for me because I love cooking, baking, and talking about food! Almost all my books feature delicious food, and I sometimes include recipes in my newsletters.

About the Author
Not a Flamenco Dancer: I chose my pen name, Carla Luna, because it’s my maiden name. However, it also belongs to a famous American flamenco dancer. When I was in my twenties, two police officers once came to my apartment to question me about a murder. It turned out that the other Carla Luna’s ex-boyfriend had murdered someone and was on the run from the police! I must have convinced the police that they had the wrong Carla Luna because I never heard from them again.
Epic Fantasy Writer: One of the earliest books I ever wrote was an 800-page fantasy romance, entitled The Sultan’s Daughter, set in a world that resembled the Ottoman Empire. Though the book was far too long and unwieldy to consider publishing, at the time I was incredibly proud of it!
Romance Lover: Though I used to write science fiction and fantasy when I was younger, I found my groove when I started writing romance. I love it when a couple goes through all kinds of trials and tribulations before getting their well-deserved happy ending. In addition to writing and reading romance, I also love watching rom-coms; among my perpetual favourites are When Harry Met Sally, Notting Hill, and You’ve Got Mail.
